Final Draw soccer fever not only set Cape Town alight last week, but could lead to much-needed job creation and wealth generation among craft producers.
The Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) teamed up with Bead Merchants of Africa to transform the spacious outlet at 223 Long Street into a treasure trove of handmade crafts for the soccer event.
Bead Merchant owner Catherine le Sueur curated the Cape Town Stadium’s Visitors Centre and is a keen promoter of Western Cape craft.
Stock made for local and foreign visitors ranged from bright soccer boots made of beads, with wire laces, to vuvuzela key rings and 2010-inspired ceramics. There were also décor objects reflecting the sense of place of Cape Town and the Province.
“We had a wonderful shop downstairs where anyone could browse and buy beautiful products made by Western Cape craft producers and designer makers,” said CCDI 2010 project officer Thandeka Tyatyantsi. “There were be plenty of craft items that made ideal festive season gifts.
“Upstairs we met with retail and corporate buyers, as shops needed to stock up for the tourist season and the 450 000 visitors expected for the global soccer event. Companies can still order bespoke corporate gifts from Handmade [Cape] Wholesale. Contact us on
