image Calling all master wire artists - Can you reflect the richness of the Cape through wire art?

The Cape Craft & Design Institute is inviting all master wire artists who live and work in the Cape to take part in the Wire art competition running from June 20 - September 2007. The competition is a collaborative initiative between the CCDI, V&A Waterfront and Cape Town Tourism.

Wire artists are invited to a briefing meeting on 20 June at the CCDI premises at 75 Harrington Street, East City Cape Town. The meeting will be hosted by CCDI and Cape Town Tourism at which the wire artists will be briefed on the theme and other details of the competition.

The theme for the competition is Wire + plus [this is my Cape Town]. The contest provides an opportunity to showcase the talent of creative wire artists and recognizes their contribution to the growing craft sector in the Western Cape.

To enter the competition interested parties can submit a drawing proposal on A3 page 42 x 20cm or a wire scale model about the size of A4 envelop. Final works of art can be in the form of wire sculpture plus beads, recycled can, paper or anything else that will complement the wire art. Closing date for entries will be on 04 July 2007.

A p rofessional selection panel will judge the submissions. The winning pieces of the competition will be exhibited for one month at the V&A Waterfront. The art pieces will also be auctioned for sale.

The Cape Craft & Design Institute aims at contributing to the Western Cape’s drive to Build a better home for all, supporting craft producers, networking all players in the product-to-market chain, promoting Cape Craft and encouraging unlimited creativity and innovation. Cape Town Tourism promotes tourism and tourism services in the City, and encourages emersion into destinations and cultures, which gives Cape Town its unique energy and appeal. The V&A Waterfront as a prominent property developer is committed to the development of small business opportunities, and sees this competition as an ideal channel to establish the profile of wire artists.
